Production Capabilities

Flexible Coating Systems for Parts of Different Sizes

North Star Coating operates nine PVD coating machines within its 14,000-square-foot facility. Multiple coating systems provide the flexibility and capacity required to process small precision tooling, production components, and substantially larger industrial parts.

The coating chambers can process components measuring up to 70 inches long and 36 inches in diameter. Every chamber can run multiple coating technologies and support single-layer, multi-layer, and nano-layer coating structures.

01

Single-Layer Coatings

Focused coating structures designed to provide specific combinations of hardness, wear resistance, friction control, and surface protection.

02

Multi-Layer Coatings

Multiple coating layers can be combined to balance adhesion, hardness, toughness, thermal stability, and wear resistance.

03

Nano-Layer Coatings

Extremely thin alternating layers can create specialized coating properties for demanding machining, forming, and wear applications.

Analytical Equipment

Measuring the Properties That Matter

North Star Coating uses dedicated analytical equipment to evaluate coating hardness, adhesion, thickness, surface roughness, substrate hardness, microscopic condition, and decorative color.

Coating Hardness

Fischerscope Nano-Indenter

Nano-indentation testing evaluates the mechanical properties and hardness of thin PVD coating films.

Surface Roughness

Mitutoyo Profilometer

Profilometer measurements help evaluate the texture and roughness of component surfaces before and after coating.

Adhesion and Substrate Hardness

Phase II Rockwell Tester

Rockwell testing supports coating adhesion evaluation and verifies the hardness of the underlying tool or component material.

Coating Thickness

CSEM Calotest

Calotest measurement verifies the thickness of the deposited PVD coating film.

Visual Inspection

Metro-Cad 100X Microscope

Magnified binocular inspection allows coated surfaces and test areas to be examined for visible features and surface condition.

Decorative Color Analysis

Minolta Spectrophotometer

Spectrophotometer measurements provide objective color analysis for decorative PVD coating finishes.
